3 Pleated Skirts We Love & How To Wear Them

By Sophie Tarif | Styles | 13/08/18

Pleated skirts are a true wardrobe staple, full stop. Why? There are plenty of reasons, but I’m not going to expand on each one because, I promise you, we’ll be here forever. So let me stick with my favourite reason, which is… pleated skirts flatter every body type, every height, and are available in over a million colours from all over the rainbow (and beyond). Petites, O body types, maternity styles, a pleated skirt will be found for everyone. Alright, alright, I can’t contain myself so I’ll let one more reason slip: they’re a great option for any season. As long as accordingly styled, you can easily wear it to the office, a brunch with your girlfriends or to uni. A pleated skirt offers endless possibilities, so I’ve gathered my 3 favourite pleated skirt styles and how to wear them to help you figure out what to do with this wardrobe essential.

Without further ado, 3 styles I love:

  1. Pleated sequin skirt

  2. Pleated midi skirt

  3. Pleated tartan skirt

Styling The Pleated Skirt

The great thing about this style of skirt is that it’s truly a blank slate. You can go in a million different directions and every time you’ll discover a new way to style the skirt according to your preferences. Wear it casual with a pair of sneakers and a white t-shirt, dress it up with a pair of high heels and a shiny bomber jacket or for casual-chic vibes go for a pair of sandals and a brightly coloured top.

The Pleated Sequin Skirt

This one’s for the party girls among us who love celebrating each new day. Metallic, sequined, glitterrrrrr everywhere! And yes, even if your wardrobe is mainly black, grey and white, you’ll get lucky, because there are also black sequin skirts! Beyond doubt, this skirt is for everyone.

How To Style It
Once you’ve chosen your favourite colourful pleated sequin skirt, the way to go is to keep the remaining items basic, as to leave all attention to your skirt. Therefore you couldn’t go wrong with a simple white, grey or black crop top. Now, it’s of course up to you and your personal preferences whether you pick a pair of sneakers or go for a pair of high heels. Personally I love adding a bit of heel to a look, so I’m going to go with a pair of black midi heeled sandals. Add a black tote for during the day and swap for a clutch at night.

The Pleated Midi Skirt

For those incredibly hot days when you want an easy, breezy look but you’re too tired of wide leg trousers, dresses and jumpsuits & platsuits, a pleated midi skirt is your savior in need.

How To Style It
So, so easy to wear and to style, with a simple white or light grey tee and a pair of sandals, a small shoulder bag and a bangle or two is all you need when you head out to see your friends or do some shopping.

The Pleated Tartan Skirt

If you’re just as a huge Clueless fan as I am, you’ll love this one. Iconic ‘90s, a pleated tartan skirt is a must have for the coming year or so. We’re seeing tartan come right back into fashion and you cannot go wrong with a wink to pop culture past.

How To Style It
A la Cher, of course! Is there even a question? Okay, finding a skirt-and-jacket tartan outfit might be hard, but hey, a tartan skirt is all you really need. Whether you pick forever known yellow/browny tartan print, a black and white Dionne or red and black for the classics among us, align the colours in the tartan print with the rest of your look. For example, this pleated tartan skirt has a bit of red, blue and black in it. So you can easily style it with a bordeaux red jumper, black high leg boots and a black rucksack.
