With so many popular and world known French, Italian, British and American designers and clothing labels out there, it’s not easy to compete as Australian fashion brands. It can certainly be difficult to have a reach beyond mainland Australia, and making a mark can take twice, three times as long as other nationalities. But there are some Australian designers who have reached worldwide fame, some that have entered the holy circle of respected designer brands. We should celebrate those, their achievements, and the beautiful, beautiful clothes they design for us.
Australian fashion brands you should shop
Aussie clothing labels #1: Keep what you find at Finders Keepers
With a range of gorgeously designed women’s wear, there is no doubt you’ll find something you love. Based in Adelaide, this clothing label offers clothes for the twentysomething girl that just wants to have fun. Seen on it girls like Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Whitney Port, Jessica Alba and Iggy Azalea, the brand produces eleven (!) well-curated collections annually for the versatile Finders girl.
OZ designer brands #2: Have some sass with sass & bide
Founded by two best friends Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton in 1999, the brand showcased its first collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2001, after which it has been at the forefront of women’s designer brands ever since. With collections that include ready-to-wear as well as exclusive gallery pieces, there’s no denying sass & bide is one of Australia’s biggest and most famous designer brands.

Australian designers #3: Feminine with alice McCALL
Known for the feminine cut and intricate detailing, the fashion brand was launched at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in 2004. Alice had by then gained a fan base with self-crafted, one-of-a-kind silk pieces, and had transformed her own core value into the brand’s: it’s all about the “concept of ‘craft’”. Fans include Beyonce, Margot Robbie and a collection of influencers such as Sarah Ellen.
Australian fashion brands #4: Suring with Billabong
Probably the biggest surf and lifestyle brand in the world, Billabong is the number one place to find surfwear that is fashionable and practical. It all started when founder Gordion Merchant started producing handmade boardshorts in 1973, and grew on to become not only a fashion icon for surfwear but also a lifestyle brand. The name Billabong was derived from the Wiradjuri word bilabaŋ (translating to “creek that runs only during the rainy season”), and captures Gordon’s days when he was found chasing the waves all day, every day.
