LONG READ -- Summer in australia is near and we’re all getting excited for the longer days ahead, the summer sun and most importantly, the time off to relax, enjoy great food and travel around a little! I can’t be the only one with too many plans, not enough time and not enough money.. am I? I can imagine I’m most certainly not. Which is why I jumped through the roof when one of my colleagues told me she’s planning a cruise along the Caribbean islands this summer. She’s a GENIUS in disguise is what I thought when she first laid down the plan and showed me where the cruise stops along the way. A christmas cruise holidays is exactly what we need this summer!
There are so many holiday destinations to choose from, whether you want to stay close to home or you want to go all out and fly out far. But there are few of them that are giving me major FOMO (fear of missing out) vibes. Oh oh.. which one to pick? And once I’ve chosen the cruise holidays I’ll be relaxing on, what to pack for a cruise? I know you’re asking those same questions, so do not worry for a second, I’ve got alllll the answers!
My favourite cruise holidays destinations
Holiday destinations close to home
You don’t need to go far to see magnificent views! If you’re planning on not spending too much this summer but still want that holiday feeling, a cruise along the Australian coast is a great solution. For some reason or other (money) Australians tend to not travel within Australia, which is such a shame. So spend this summer in australia and take the chance to discover your own country.
Destinations I’m loving this year in Australia:
Melbourne / Sydney / Adelaide / Tasmania
Cruise holidays that go a little bit further
Tired of the same old Australia? A trip close but not too close to home is your solution. Explore a new country, culture and cuisine by going on a cruise not too far from Australia. Departing from Sydney and Melbourne you’ll find plenty of cruises that are exploring the pacific ocean and giving you exactly what you need: sun, beach, and good food.
Where to go if you want to stay close:
New Zealand / New Caledonia / Vanuatu / Solomon Islands
Holiday destinations that go all the way
If you’ve got time and you don’t mind spending a bit more on your christmas travels, a cruise along the Caribbean islands is the perfect summer getaway. The Caribbean is actually quite big and covering all the islands and ports will take you more than a month, I reckon. Which is why it’d be best to pick a shorter cruise that visits a few main ports and so welcomes you to a few of the best places around.
Caribbean cruises to choose from:
Havana - Belize - Honduras - Jamaica / Haiti - Jamaica - Aruba - Dominica - Puerto Rico / Haiti - Jamaica - Havana - Bahama’s / Dominican Republic - Puerto Rico - Dominica - Barbados - Caracas
What to pack for a cruise?
If you’re going on a cruise you must be aware of the fact you’re not allowed to bring a lot of luggage with you. Meaning, you have to be selective while choosing what you’re bringing with you! Pick items you can easily style with each other to create new outfits every single day.
Not sure what these items are? Read on to discover what to pack for a cruise!
Cruise holidays must haves
A pair of timeless, minimalist pair of denim shorts is one of your absolute essentials for a cruise. They’re easy to style with a cute white top or with your swimwear.

The golden rule is be comfortable and stylish at the same time. To do so, a pair of adidas sliders or birkenstock slippers are the perfect choice.

You’ll probably spend the majority of your time on board relaxing by the pool, so a few bikinis or swimsuits are simply a must. This year go for a cut-out or colourblock swimsuit or opt for a simple bikini. Summer of 2018/2019 is all about being simple but classic - so a navy blue or black bikini will make you look effortless while you’re chilling.

You cannot forget a pair of sunglasses trend of the year, hair accessories (think: velvet headband / knot half turban), straw tote and a few golden earrings.
Oh la la, Titanic Nights
Each cruise line always organises some kind of (fancy) parties at night. Bring a white wedge heel (it’ll look really great with your tan!) and a few party dresses with you so you can party away in style.
